House Bill 6544 bans commonly owned semi-automatic rifles and forces gun registration
Lansing, MI –Last week, Rep. Jeffrey Pepper (D-Dearborn) introduced House Bills 6544-6546, a so-called “assault weapons” ban which would outlaw the sale of semi-automatic rifles in Michigan, while also forcing law-abiding gun owners to register their firearms.
“Democrats haven’t even taken control of the House and they are already introducing bans on commonly-owned semi-auto rifles used for hunting, self-defense and sports shooting,” said Brenden Boudreau, Executive Director for Great Lakes Gun Rights. “Great Lakes Gun Rights opposes this draconian measure, and we’re mobilizing our members in opposition to these ridiculous bills.”
House Bills 6544-6546 also bans the open carry of firearms and increases penalties for Michiganders who fail to comply. Failure to register legally owned rifles could result in a felony charge and up to five years in prison.
“Five years in prison because you didn’t register your gun — that’s more jail time than assaulting a police officer. Once again, instead of producing real solutions to keep Michigan safe, anti-gun Democrats and Gretchen Whitmer are going after honest gun owners and creating a system of gun control which does nothing to protect our communities but entraps otherwise law-abiding citizens.” said Boudreau.
Great Lakes Gun Rights is urging pro-gun Michiganders to contact their legislators and demand they oppose HB 6544-6546 and all other gun control bills to be filed in the 2023 legislative session.
