Where Are Michigan’s Congressional Republicans on Massie’s National Constitutional Carry Act?

Gun owners in Michigan have every reason to celebrate H.R. 645, the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY-4). This bill would enshrine the fundamental right to carry a firearm for self-defense across all 50 states—without being forced to navigate a patchwork of burdensome and unconstitutional permitting schemes.

Great Lakes Gun Rights, the leading gun rights organization in Michigan, has been at the forefront of this fight, standing shoulder to shoulder with the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) to push H.R. 645 forward. We understand what is at stake: in nearly half the country, Americans can already carry firearms without a government permission slip. But in Michigan, and 20 other states, millions of law-abiding gun owners remain shackled by outdated and oppressive regulations.

Here’s the question gun owners in the Great Lakes State should be asking: Why haven’t the following Republican members of Congress from Michigan co-sponsored this bill?

  • Jack Bergman (District 1)
  • John Moolenaar (District 2)
  • Bill Huizenga (District 4)
  • Tim Walberg (District 5)
  • Tom Barrett (District 7)
  • Lisa McClain (District 9)
  • John James (District 10)

Michigan is a state built on self-reliance and freedom, and its gun owners know the Second Amendment isn’t about duck hunting—it’s about the right to defend yourself and your loved ones against any threat. Yet, despite a congressional delegation that includes several Republicans who claim to be staunch defenders of the right to bear arms, not one has yet stepped up to support this crucial legislation.

To his credit, Congressman Tom Barrett (CD-7) not only co-sponsored Constitutional Carry but also voted for it during his time in the Michigan Legislature, but he is the only Republican with a clear record of support on the issue.

H.R. 645 is about more than just reciprocity—it’s about restoring our gun rights at the federal level, ensuring that Americans can exercise their constitutional freedoms without interference. The bill eliminates bureaucratic barriers that penalize lawful gun owners simply for crossing state lines. If you can carry in your home state without a permit, you should be able to carry anywhere in the country. It’s common sense, and it’s the Second Amendment, plain and simple.

So, again, where are Michigan’s Republicans?

It’s time for Michigan’s Second Amendment supporters to take action. Call your Congressman. Email their offices. Find out why they aren’t backing H.R. 645 yet. This bill is a test of who truly stands for gun rights and who only pays lip service when election season rolls around.

Michigan Republicans have a choice: They can stand with the gun owners of their state, or they can stand aside and let our rights continue to be trampled. Let’s make sure they choose wisely.
