Just to be clear, there is no legal authority for her to take this action.
Benson’s argument is that since there is no clear state law on it, she’ll take matters into her own hands to prevent “confusion.”
But that’s not how this works. The Secretary of State can’t just invent new authority for herself out of thin air because it fits her narrative and agenda.
We are a nation of laws, not of the opinions of one politician.
Further, she may actually be violating a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling, meaning that she could be lining up to put Michigan taxpayers on the hook for a pricey legal battle, all over her anti-gun ideology.
I’m already in conversations with other gun groups and the National Foundation for Gun Rights, reviewing all of our options to get Secretary Benson to back down from her unlawful usurpation.
