Lansing, MI – Tomorrow, the House Elections Committee is holding a hearing on a pair of gun control bills which would prohibit law-abiding Michiganders from possessing or carrying a firearm within 100 feet of a polling place on election day.
“Intentionally criminalizing lawful concealed carry is an affront to the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Michiganders,” said Brenden Boudreau, Executive Director for Great Lakes Gun Rights. “But it’s not just concealed carry they’re going after – it’s the possession of any legally owned firearm anywhere close to a polling place in Michigan. This is a solution in search of a problem, and anti-gun Democrats are purposefully jeopardizing scores of Michiganders with their insane policy agenda. This will undoubtedly lead to voter suppression of gun-owning Michiganders.”
House Bills 4127-4128 will ban the possession of a firearm within 100 feet of a polling place on election day and ban the possession of otherwise legally carried firearms 40 days before an election at any ballot drop box location.
The misdemeanor violation of House Bills 4127-4128 can include a 90-day jail sentence.
“Think of how easy this will be for someone to accidentally violate. A law-abiding citizen taking their dog for a walk or casually heading into a store where a ballot box is located would instantly become a criminal if they are peacefully carrying a firearm. There’s countless ballot drop box locations spread throughout the state, and under these bills, the 100 feet around polling places and ballot drop boxes would now constitute another ‘gun free’ zone. These bills are designed to discourage law-abiding gun owners from ever carrying a firearm because they vastly expand ‘gun free’ zones in Michigan. We are opposing this pair of gun control bills,” concluded Boudreau.
Great Lakes Gun Rights is urging pro-gun Michiganders to call their legislators and demand they oppose HB 4127- HB 4128
