Senate District 35 Special Election Set for May 5: Clear Contrast on the Second Amendment

The results are in from the primary election in Michigan’s 35th Senate District, and voters now have a clear head-to-head matchup heading into the May 5th special election.

Republican Jason Tunney will face Democrat Chedrick Greene in a race that could have significant implications for the balance of power in Lansing — and for the future of the Second Amendment in Michigan.

For gun owners, the contrast between the two candidates could not be clearer.

Jason Tunney: 100% Pro-Gun, On the Record

Jason Tunney has returned his Great Lakes Gun Rights candidate survey with a 100% pro-gun score.

That means Tunney has gone on record supporting:

  • Repealing of Whitmer’s“Red Flag” gun confiscation law
  • Repealing of the draconian Permit to Purchase scheme
  • Making Michigan a Constitutional Carry State

Tunney also opposes firearm, magazine, and accessory bans

Just as importantly, Tunney didn’t dodge the questions. He put his positions in writing and submitted them for voters to see.

A 100% survey score is more than a campaign talking point. It is a written commitment. It signals that if elected, Tunney is aligned with restoring and defending the right to keep and bear arms, not managing its decline.

Chedrick Greene: Just another Gun Ban Candidate

Democrat Chedrick Greene, by contrast, has publicly aligned himself with what he describes as “common sense” gun control measures.

Gun owners in Michigan have learned exactly what “common sense” means in Lansing.

In 2023, that phrase was used to justify:

  • Expanding Michigan’s draconian Permit to Purchase system to include ALL firearms
  • Enacting “Red Flag” gun confiscation laws that allow firearms to be seized without due process
  • Imposing mandatory storage mandates that criminalize otherwise law-abiding gun owners

From a no-compromise Second Amendment perspective, “common sense” gun control is not a neutral phrase. It is political shorthand for incremental restrictions that expand government power and reduce individual liberty.

Greene has also been endorsed by Giffords PAC, a national gun control organization that has consistently supported bans on commonly owned firearms, expanded background check and registration schemes, and sweeping restrictions on lawful gun ownership.

An endorsement from Giffords PAC is not symbolic. It signals ideological alignment with one of the most aggressive gun control lobbying operations in the country.

What’s at Stake on May 5

The May 5th special election will determine who represents Senate District 35 in Lansing at a time when Michigan gun owners are already fighting to repeal recently enacted gun control laws.

One candidate has gone on the record with a 100% pro-Second Amendment survey.

The other embraces “common sense” gun control and carries the endorsement of a national gun control PAC.

Great Lakes Gun Rights does not endorse candidates. We report where they stand.

In this race, Michiganders have a clear contrast — written commitments versus gun control rhetoric.

Michigan gun owners in Senate District 35 will have the final say on May 5th.
