Today I was in Lansing for our hearing before the Michigan Court of Appeals for our lawsuit with Michigan Open Carry against the Michigan Legislature.

As you know, this lawsuit is a result of anti-gun Democrats in both the House and Senate denying gun owners the opportunity to testify against their gun control agenda back in 2023.

Through multiple committee hearings in both legislative chambers on their “Red Flag” gun confiscation scheme, universal permit to purchase and mandatory storage proposals, Democrats repeatedly showed favoritism towards gun control advocates and blocked our ability to address the committees.

The Legislature violated the Open Meetings Act and ran roughshod over the constitutional rights of Michiganders when it held these dog-and-pony show committee hearings that were poorly masqueraded gun control rallies.

Our attorney Tom Lambert of Michigan Open Carry laid out the case before the Court of Appeals that this is about the Legislature following its own laws and having a transparent and open government by and for the people.

Procedure matters. The way the Legislature passes legislation matters.

We do not want to live under a system of government where one party abuses the power of the legislative branch to ram through their agenda while thumbing their nose at state law and legislative procedure.

Even though Republicans now control the Michigan House of Representatives, we pushed ahead with our lawsuit because we believe that the laws apply the full Legislature regardless of which party is in control.

People thought we were crazy for suing an entire branch of the Michigan government and though the odds are long that we’ll get a rock-solid ruling in our favor, the fact is we must fight at every turn, or they’ll just continue to abuse their power and eviscerate our rights.

The fact is that a Court of Claims judge determined that the Legislature violated the Open Meetings Act, but did not take any action against them.

As a result, the Democrats seemed to respond by allowing us to testify in subsequent committee hearings after that headline rocked the political class.

It’s anyone’s guess what will happen next, but rest assured we will keep fighting for your rights on every front.
