Lansing politicians don’t want you to see what’s really happening under Michigan’s Red Flag gun confiscation law.
And now we know why.
New reporting confirms what gun owners have feared all along: the state is actively hiding detailed information about how and why firearms are being seized from law-abiding citizens.
That’s right.
The same government that gave itself the power to strip you of your Second Amendment rights without due process is now making sure there’s no transparency, no accountability, and no way for the public to track how that power is being used.
Gun Confiscation Without Transparency
As you know, Michigan’s “Red Flag” law allows firearms to be confiscated from individuals accused of being a risk to themselves or others.
But here’s the problem:
The state is no longer providing detailed public data on these cases.
Previously, journalists were able to obtain anonymized records showing:
- What triggered the confiscation
- Who filed the petition
- The basic circumstances behind each case
Now?
That information is being locked away inside the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) — a system completely inaccessible to the public.
Even researchers and officials tasked with studying the law admit they don’t know why many of these orders are being issued.
Let that sink in.
The government is seizing firearms, trampling on a constitutional right, and even they can’t fully explain the circumstances behind it.
Hundreds of Gun Owners Targeted — Most Without a Hearing
What little data is still available raises even more serious concerns.
- 514 Red Flag petitions were filed in 2025
- 407 were granted by judges
- Nearly 90% were issued “ex parte” — meaning without a prior hearing
That means in most cases, gun owners are having their firearms confiscated before they ever get a chance to defend themselves in court.
That’s not how constitutional rights are supposed to work.
Incomplete Data, Missing Answers
Even the limited annual reports released by the state are riddled with gaps.
Basic information like:
- Age
- Gender
- Race
…is frequently listed as “unknown.”
And the most important questions go completely unanswered:
- What specific actions or accusations triggered the confiscation?
- Were those claims ever proven?
- How many of these cases are later overturned?
The truth is, we simply don’t know.
And that’s exactly how anti-gun politicians want it.
What They Don’t Want You to See
When more detailed data was available in 2024, it revealed deeply troubling examples:
- Firearm confiscation orders issued against minors — including a 6-year-old
- Use of the law against law enforcement officers themselves
Now, with over 500 cases in a single year, that level of detail has disappeared.
Why?
Because transparency exposes abuse.
And those pushing gun control can’t afford for the public to see how this law is really being used.
Even Supporters Admit There’s a Problem
This isn’t just a concern raised by gun rights advocates.
Even those involved in implementing and studying the law admit:
- Data collection is incomplete
- Many courts are not cooperating
- There is no centralized, accessible system for understanding how the law is being applied
In other words — no one has the full picture.
This Is Why We Must Repeal Red Flag Laws
Red Flag laws were sold as a “common sense” solution.
But in reality, they’ve created a system where:
- Firearms can be confiscated without due process
- Accusations can trigger government action without full transparency
- And now, the public is being kept in the dark about how often — and how aggressively — these powers are being used
That’s unacceptable.
In America, you are innocent until proven guilty.
And certainly the government should not operate behind closed doors when it comes to taking away constitutional freedoms.
Take Action: Repeal Red Flag in Michigan
Great Lakes Gun Rights is leading the charge to REPEAL Michigan’s Red Flag gun confiscation law.
Because no matter how politicians try to spin it:
A system that allows secretive confiscation of firearms is a direct threat to our rights as American citizens.
And a government that hides how it uses that power is even more dangerous.
If we don’t act now, this is just the beginning.
Join the fight. Stand for your rights. And help us put an end to Michigan’s Red Flag gun confiscation scheme once and for all.
