Yesterday the Michigan House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on Republican State Rep. Jim DeSana’s three bill package (HB 4138-4140) that would repeal Michigan’s “Red Flag” gun confiscation scheme.
I was there representing the members and supporters of Great Lakes Gun Rights, along with representatives from Michigan Open Carry and other gun groups.
You can watch my testimony by clicking here (or the image below).

While committee hearings are mostly political theater, this was the first opportunity for most of us in the gun rights movements to get a chance to expose the horrors and abuses of “Red Flag” laws, with several examples being brought before the committee by attorneys representing law-abiding Michiganders who have wrongly been denied of their rights and have been blatantly abused by the process.
Back in 2023, Democrat State Representative Kelly Breen, a rabid anti-gunner, was the chair of the House Judiciary Committee who denied gun rights proponents the ability to testify against this due process-shredding law.
She now sits on this committee as a minority member where she lashed out at Rep. DeSana and the gun rights community for demolishing her precious gun grab law.
This hearing also gave me an opportunity to present and deliver over 10,000 of your petitions calling on your lawmakers to repeal “Red Flag” gun confiscation in Michigan.

(Over 10,000 petitions from GLGR members and supporters delivered to House Judiciary Chair Sarah Lightner’s office calling for the repeal of Whitmer’s gun confiscation scheme.)
While holding hearings on this package of bills was a good start and gave the gun rights movement a chance to expose all that is wrong with “Red Flag” laws, ultimately, we expect more.
We’re calling on the House Judiciary Committee to vote HB 4138-4140 out of committee and for the Michigan House of Representatives to take it up for immediate consideration with an up-or-down vote.
Michiganders deserve to know where their Representatives when it comes to repealing this outrageous abomination of a law and restoring our rights to due process in the state of Michigan.
Stay tuned for more opportunities to take action in the weeks ahead as we turn up the grassroots pressure to encourage our lawmakers to hold votes on these bills to repeal Whitmer’s gun confiscation scheme once and for all.
